Remove the Topsoil

The first step is to break the sod. If your topography is suitable you may be able to do all the digging work by hand. This is usually only the case if there is already a natural bowl shape in the right area of the site and if there is impermeable clay soil to hold in the liquid. Other­wise the work will be a bit on the heavy side for all but the most enthusiastic shovellers. Typically breaking the sod requires heavier machinery – usually a large digger on tracks.
